Cross-Ice: 6 and Under
Overview
Cross-Ice is all about fun and giving kids their first real taste of hockey! Most players are 5–6 years old, usually in Kindergarten or First Grade. By the time they join, we ask that they’re able to stand on the ice by themselves and skate the length of the rink at least once. Don’t worry — they don’t need to be great skaters yet, but having that little bit of a foundation helps them feel more confident and ready to enjoy the game. If your child is brand new to skating, no problem — we can connect you with some of our partner programs that focus on building those early skating skills.
In Cross-Ice, players are grouped by age and placed on small teams with 2–4 dedicated coaches. Teams are usually 8–10 kids, keeping things fun, supportive, and easy for everyone to learn together. All players follow the same schedule, making it a great way to grow skills, build friendships, and have a blast on the ice!
Cross-Ice Season Schedule (Example – Subject to Change)

Ice Time: 3 skates per week
- Skills Session – Weeknight (4:20-5:20p) @ Bavis Rink

- Game Day – Saturday mornings (9:15, 10:15, or 11:15am) @ Pilgrim Rink B
- Half-ice games with boards, scoreboard, and lots of fun! Teams play other Hingham Cross-Ice teams.
- Goalies start a few weeks in, and everyone gets a chance to try it.
- Team Practice – Sunday afternoons @ Pilgrim Rink A (full ice)
- Multiple teams practice together. Coaches run stations for skating, stickhandling, and passing.

Mite House: 8 and Under
Overview
Mite-House is one of the most exciting and memorable years in Hingham Youth Hockey! Designed for 7-8 year-olds, this level builds on the fun of Cross-Ice with more skill development, small-group instruction, and a bigger focus on games and competition.
The best part? All the action stays right here in Hingham at Pilgrim Rink B—no travel required! And with Hingham known as one of the strongest programs on the South Shore, the competition is always fast-paced and fun.
Players are divided into four evenly matched teams—Crimson, Eagles, Huskies, and Terriers—named after Boston’s legendary Division I college hockey programs. Each season wraps up with our very own “Beanpot,” where the four HYH teams face off in a spirited battle for bragging rights.
